  1. This one resonates the most with me. The other images are beautiful while this one is of the mundane yet it is more poetic. A familiar image on a diner table where many conversations begin.

  2. Since Aaron shoots digital, I'd guess this is photoshop vignetting. But I could be wrong.

I like this one a lot, too. Could be the start of a long relationship, or a conversation where dreams are shared. Could be a fateful meeting where an idea is born, the product of two well caffeinated minds.

Of course, it could also be the beginning of a meal, which in itself is often a very beautiful thing. Especially a meal at a good diner. MMMM.

  3. one of the parameters that i have set for myself with this project is that i want to do as little editing as possible. so far there has been very little cropping (since i sent participants the dimensions for the images) and i only play with the image so that the text is [more or less] legible. further, i intend the text to function as 'flatly' as possible i.e. it stays consistent (and will). i don't want to bring in too many aesthetic variables because i want the viewer/ reader to focus on the relationship between the image and text (and the shifts over the course of the project).

  4. no, it's about both - it's just that I don't want to be making the asethetic choices - the participants are. i've made a choice about the font and framing (clean, simple, not too fancy), but the aesthetic aspects beyond that are primarily the participants' responsibility (i.e. the images they choose to share). i'm interested in how the text and image interact, and i want to keep that fairly tight.

  5. So - can we fool the system? Now that I know where the text is placed, can I be manipulative and create a frame more intentionally next time. I don't want to do that, I don't think, but I wonder if I'll be able to resist the temptation and pretend I don't know. Or perhaps the text WON'T be in the same spot each month. Hmmmm.

  6. well, dave...you can try. if there is indeed a system. you are free to do whatever you want with your image. the fact is that you are already making choices about framing anyway, whether with the original image or if you do any cropping to make it fit into my dimensional requirements. in any case, i'm trying not to make too many aesthetic decisions. that said, rest assured, i do have some plans for the text as the project moves forward...

  7. This image puts me immediately in mind of the movie "Girl in the Cafe" where a thing that started at a diner table and appeared to be beautiful turned into something very sad and unpleasant. I find a waiting quality to this image, the commonality of the location/objects. There is nothing grand here at all, yet even from these humble beginnings can something beautiful come.
